  著者は、日本の砂州地形の調査を継続しておこない、砂州地形の発達を規定する要因として、地球規模の気候および海面変化に加えて、日本特有の地殻変動が影響していることを明らかにした世界でも数少ない研究者の一人。その著者が、海面上昇期における環境を復元する方法として、それまで用いられてこなかった化石分析を取り入れ、完新世を通しての約1万年間における砂州地形発達史を、本書で明らかにした。この研究成果は、自然地理学ばかりでなく，地質学・地震学・考古学・海岸工学など他分野の研究にも貢献することが期待される。また、国内外の需要に幅広く応えるため、欧文書として刊行する。
  
  Coastal ridge landforms are mostly distributed in the lowlands along the Japanese coast and are important landforms for human settlement during the Holocene. This book presents the geomorphological development of coastal ridges during the Holocene in Japan. In addition, it offers a discussion of the influence of sea level changes and tectonic movements on coastal ridge formation. The relationship between coastal ridge development and human activities is also identified.

  松原 彰子
  慶應義塾大学経済学部教授。理学博士。1987年東京大学大学院理学系研究科地理学博士課程修了。
  専門は、自然地理学、第四紀学。1990年、日本地理学会研究奨励賞受賞。
  主な著書・翻訳に、『自然地理学』（単著、初版2006年、第3版2011年、当社）、『人文地理学 ―― その主題と課題』（共著、2005年、慶應義塾大学出版会）、『日本の地形5　中部』（分担執筆、2006年、東京大学出版会）、『ジオ・メディアの系譜 ―― 進化する地表象の世界』（共著、2010年、慶應義塾大学出版会）、『図説　世界の地理　第8巻　フランス』（共訳、2003年、朝倉書店）など。
