  Though they are called (by AC Bradley) "the four great tragedies", there is such a great difference between Hamlet, which comes at the end of the Elizabethan age, and Othello, which comes at the beginning of the Jacobean age. The one is so confusing and complicated, whereas the other is so simple, with so many elements of the old medieval drama, both the morality plays and the mystery plays, leading up to the Passion and Death of Jesus.

  Peter Milward (ピーター　ミルワード)
  Peter Milward was born in London on October 12, 1925, and educated at Wimbledon College (a Jesuit high school). He entered the Society of Jesus in 1943, and after various studies he went on to specialize in the Classics and English at Oxford University. He came to Japan in 1954 and after further studies was ordained priest in 1960. From 1962 onwards he has taught English literature at Sophia University in Tokyo.
